Alliance for Choice and London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign Joint Statement

Press Release

6th June 2017

London Irish Abortion Rights Campaign and Alliance for Choice are encouraged to see that the debate on abortion in Northern Ireland is finally taking place in the House of Commons.

We thank Labour MP, Stella Creasy for her efforts in keeping this to the fore and we are heartened at the cross-party support that the proposal was received.

It is clear from yesterday's debate that the DUP are miles behind their voters and the rest of the Northern Ireland electorate. They have demonstrated that even if the Assembly were up and running they would have no interest in representing the views and needs of people in Northern Ireland and would instead block progress.

We are eager to receive confirmation of a date for the Domestic Abuse Bill and look forward to continue working with those who support us.

The Offences Against the Persons Act is 150 years old, and sections 58 and 59 of it are not fit for purpose. We urge the government to commit to bringing forward the Domestic Violence Bill within the next 150 days.
